Open Source Contribution System

Build reputation that compounds

About This Guide

Open source reputation is one of the few assets that compounds without active maintenance. A PR merged six months ago still shows up on your profile. A pattern of contributions across a dozen projects tells a story that no resume can. This guide sets up your AI agent as an active open source contributor — finding issues, evaluating projects, generating PRs, and tracking your growing reputation.

The issue finder script uses the GitHub CLI to search across repositories for issues tagged good-first-issue and help-wanted, filtered by language, recency, and activity level. Most of these issues are documentation improvements, small bug fixes, or test coverage additions — exactly the kind of work a coding agent handles well with minimal human review. The script scores each issue on a viability rubric: is the repo active, is the maintainer responsive, is the issue well-specified?

Repository evaluation is where most contributors waste time. A repo with 40,000 stars but a maintainer who hasn't merged a PR in 18 months is a dead end. The evaluation framework checks five signals: merge rate on recent PRs, maintainer response time, issue queue health, CI infrastructure quality, and community tone. If a project scores below threshold, skip it — your time is better spent on repos that actually merge contributions.

PR generation for documentation improvements is the highest-success entry point. Find a README that's missing an example, a doc page with a broken link, a function with no docstring. Generate the improvement, open the PR with the exact description template included here. Maintainers merge documentation PRs at 3x the rate of code PRs. Start there, build the relationship, then tackle harder issues.

Contribution tracking feeds into your reputation metrics dashboard — total PRs opened, merged rate by repo, contribution velocity over time. The blockchain reputation strategy from the broader SpiritTree framework applies: build before monetizing. A developer with 50 merged PRs across active projects has social proof that opens doors no portfolio site can match.
